Weather in New England
New England has four distinct seasons and daily average temperatures are shown below.
Springtime comes earlier to southern New England than the three northern New England states where the snow can sometimes linger into April (great for spring skiing!). In the southern part of the region however, by mid April flowers burst forth and it is a great time to catch sight of the first daffodils, lilacs and magnolias of the season.
Memorial Day at the end of May marks the traditional start of summer and summertime brings warm and sunny temperatures throughout the region. Boston is on the same latitude as Rome and days are long and sunny, perfect beach weather. Temperatures are usually a little higher in the city and cooler on the coast and in the mountains. The weather can be changeable and it would be wise to pack additional warm clothing for layers for the summer evenings by the coast or in the mountains.
Labor Day heralds the ‘close’ of summer but the much anticipated change of colors with the arrival of fall. Leaves turn and the daytime temperatures usually remain warm (around 15 – 20 C) with crisp clear nights and a warm jacket is definitely needed.
Winters are cold and brisk but with a crisp air and blue sky. Snow typically starts to fall around mid - end of November and beginning in December and lasting through mid March, freezing temperatures are common daily. The ski areas in northern New England are usually open by the Thanksgiving Holiday (the fourth Thursday in November) and close early to mid April. In the southern part of the region it is unusual for snow to remain on the ground for a long period of time.
Average Temperatures:
Spring (April & May): 5 C to 22 C
Summer (June-August): 22 C to 33 C
Fall (September-November): 7 C to 24 C
Winter (December - March): -9 C to 7 C
