If you do not want to drive or travel by coach there are various options for train travel throughout the region.

Amtrak (www.Amtrak.com) the train service for the United States offers year round services for several different routes through New England.

  • Boston - New York on the Acela Express is a fairly new high speed service which takes approximately 3 hours and 15 minutes to travel from city to city. This service also has stops in Connecticut and Rhode Island
  • Boston - Portland, ME on the Downeaster is also a fairly new service that takes approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes to travel Boston to Maine making stops in northern Massachusetts and New Hampshire en route.
  • Washington DC - New York City - Vermont on the Vermonter is a daily service that operates with stops through the states of Connecticut, Massachusetts and Vermont. A slower service than the above two journeys if you have the time this is a great way to explore the region without driving.
In addition to the Amtrak services there are a number of seasonal scenic railroads throughout New England that are well worth experiencing for a day or half day trip.
