Renting a Car
The best way to see New England is by car. Gas is inexpensive, cars
are typically automatic and outside of the major urban areas roads are
not crowded and motorists in general follow the speed limits.
All the major car rental companies are represented at airports and in
cities. You will need a credit card to rent (a debit card is not acceptable)
and typically you need a full current driving license rather than an
international driving license (although it is best to check with your
individual car rental company before travel). There may be restrictions
and at least, financial penalties for renters under 25 years of age
(again please check with the individual companies before travel).
There is no need to rent a car for your stay in Boston (it is an easy
city to walk around, public transport is efficient and inexpensive and
parking, especially at the downtown hotels is expensive). You should
start your rental when you leave the city, either arranging to pick up
the car downtown or making the short journey back to Boston Logan to
pick up the rental car at the airport.
Note: New England has many scenic routes as well as major Interstate
highways. You must drive on the RIGHT and right turns at a red stop light
(traffic light) are permitted unless specifically indicated by 'No Right
Turn On Red'. Speed limits are signposted and vary from 15mph in school
zones and 25 or 35 mph in towns to 55 to 65mph on open roads. Motorists
must stop in either direction if warning lights on a school bus are flashing. Do
not proceed until the flashing lights stop or the bus has moved on. Remember
to purchase a good road map for the region. These can be found at all major
gas stations.
