Vermont, New Hampshire, Western Massachusetts & Connecticut
13nts/14days
This tour will take you along some of New England's infamous back roads where you will discover the great natural beauty of the region. Escape the crowds and explore off the beaten track, find that perfect New England country store or village diner and meet with the locals who are happy to show off their state and always point you in the right direction. Visit some unique and fascinating museums or enjoy the outdoors with great hiking trails or golf courses. Enjoy the wonderful cuisine of New England as you feast on the great American breakfasts complete with locally grown organic produce and of course complete with pure maple syrup!
Day One: Boston, Massachusetts
For many, Boston needs no introduction as one of America's leading cities. It has built itself a huge reputation as one of the great educational, scientific and medical pioneers. By American standards, Boston is a compact and walkable city. Top strolling areas are the Boston Common with its acres of green, its lakes, music and entertainment and the golden-domed State House overlooking it and Little Italy with its well kept homes and vast selection of Italian restaurants. Other highlights of a visit to Boston include a visit to Faneuil Hall and Quincy Market, the market redevelopment that inspired London's Covent Garden and not forgetting the USS Constitution, the world's largest floating warship.
We recommend spending at least two nights in Boston

Day Two: Boston, Massachusetts
Spend the day in Boston exploring the city
Overnight Boston
Day Three: Boston - New Hampshire Lakes Region
Today you head north out of Boston and into New Hampshire. A wonderful first stop is at the Canterbury Shaker Village (www.Shakers.org) just outside of Concord, NH. It is a national historic landmark and museum with 25 restored and 4 reconstructed Shaker buildings on its 694 acre site. It is known for its tranquil beauty, exhibits, and workshops. The tours are a fascinating glimpse into history and the village also offers the opportunity to sample some local fare and traditional Shaker recipes.
Continue north to the Lakes region of New Hampshire (www.lakesregion.org) and spend a couple of nights on Lake Winnipesaukee. This vast lake dominates the region and there are fine places to stay and enjoy the charms of the lake and its many islands. You can cruise aboard the M/S Mount Washington or take a paddle yourself and go kayaking or fishing! (www.cruisenh.com )

Day Four: New Hampshire Lakes Region
Day exploring the New Hampshire Lakes Region
Suggested Activity:
Today enjoy the Lakes area or head north into the White Mountains (www.visitwhitemountains.com) for a day's drive and see the impressive Presidential, the peaks named mainly for US Presidents and over 5,000 ft high. Highest of all is the Mount Washington (6,288ft), drive up, hike up or take the old cog train but be ready for a spectacular view.
Overnight in the Lakes Region.
Day Five: New Hampshire - Northern Vermont
You head northwards today, stopping en route in Hanover located right on the Connecticut River and home to Dartmouth College. A picture perfect college town set around a lovely town green, Hanover makes a great lunch or coffee stop. Don't miss the Hood Museum, a small but beautifully designed art museum right in the center of town.
Next suggested stop north along Interstate 89 North is Montpelier, the smallest state capital in the country with only 8,000 inhabitants. Montpelier has a lively atmosphere and its two main roads, State Street and Main Street are dominated by fine coffee houses and unique boutiques. Make sure to stop in for a quick tour of the gold domed state house and a visit to the local historical society.
Continue onto Ben & Jerry's Ice cream Factory in Waterbury, Vermont's number one tourist attraction! (www.benjerry.com ) A lively and engaging tour of the factory gives you an insight into New England's most famous of all ice cream brands and the best bit is the sampling at the end!
We suggest spending a couple of nights in Northern Vermont to enjoy the bucolic landscape and outdoor life that defines Vermont.

Day Six: Northern Vermont
Day spent exploring Northern Vermont
Suggested Activity:
Discover the Northeast Kingdom.(www.travelthekingdom.com ) Remote, rugged and unspoiled, the region's name derives from a speech by long time Vermont US Senator George Aiken who said "You know, this is such beautiful country up here - it should be called the Northeast Kingdom". Bordering Quebec to the north and New Hampshire to the east, there are lots of great outdoor recreational opportunities as well as covered bridges, historical districts, lakes and charming villages. St. Johnsbury is the largest town where you can visit the Fairbanks Museum or tour the Maple Farms Grove Maple Museum and Factory or head to Derby Line where you will find half the local opera house in Quebec and the other half in Vermont!
Suggested Activity:
Discover Burlington and Lake Champlain. (www.vermont.org and www.champlainislands.com ) Bordering New York state to the west you will find Lake Champlain, one of the largest freshwater lakes in the United States. Burlington, the largest city in Vermont and hardly a metropolis with 40,000 people sits right on its shores. A large university town with a great college atmosphere and gentle hum, it has some unique Vermont craft shops and great restaurants and cafés especially on the Church Street Marketplace, a pedestrian street that runs through the main downtown shopping district. Also visit the Shelburne Museum (www.shelburnemuseum.org )located to the south of Burlington. Here you will find a collection of over 400 years of Americana, from quilts, toys, tools and art. Also well worth a visit is Shelburne Farms (www.shelburnefarms.org) which is a 1400-acre working farm, national historic site and nonprofit environmental education center located on the shores of Lake Champlain.
You can overnight in Burlington or in the other areas in Northern Vermont

Day Seven: Southern Vermont
Drive south today and head down Route 100, named "one of the most scenic drives in North America" by 'Outside Magazine". You will drive through the Mad River Valley (www.madrivervalley.com ) passing through quintessential New England villages such as Waitsfield and Warren. Make sure to stop at the Warren Store and sample some of their freshly baked goods or one of the delicious sandwiches. Along the 'spine' of the Green Mountain Forest you will understand why Vermont is considered such a special place. The cows, the red barns, the agricultural landscape, the village greens and twisting lanes represent a very traditional America.
Time allowing, stay a night in Woodstock or Killington. Visit Billings Farm & Museum (www.billingsfarm.org )that recreates farm life of last century and where you can experience the agricultural traditions of cheese making and maple sugaring. Quechee is also worth a visit and especially the Simon Pearce Mill and Showroom (www.simonpearce.com )right in the village. You can watch glass and pottery in the making.

All picture perfect and where you will find great country stores, village diners, antique shops, art galleries, and of course the prerequisite white church spires, village greens, picket fences and fine clapboard homes.
Manchester, Vermont is a fine hub of activity in the southern part of the state and here you will find Hildene (www.hildene.org ), the impressive summer home of President Lincoln's son. Tour the wonderful gardens and enjoy the home filled with presidential and Civil War memorabilia.

Day Thirteen: Connecticut/Departure
From the western part of Connecticut you have the option of departing either out of New York City or Newark Airports. Both would be an easy drive from the far west of New England. Consider a couple of nights in New York City if time allows.
If you are departing out of Boston, consider taking the longer but very pretty route along the Connecticut shore and visiting en route perhaps New Haven, home to Yale University or Essex, once voted 'best small town in America". There is still time for shopping at Clinton Crossings, an outlet center located on the coast in Westbrook before heading off to Logan for your overnight flight.
